An Introduction to Mooji
Mooji is a spiritual teacher and guide dedicated to helping others achieve self-realisation. Originally from Jamaica, Mooji was drawn to spirituality at a young age, eventually encountering the teachings of his guru, Sri H.W.L. Poonja (Papaji). After meeting Papaji in 1993, Mooji’s life transformed, and he began sharing the insights he received through direct self-inquiry.
Mooji’s approach focuses on the timeless teachings of Advaita Vedanta (non-duality) and the direct experience of one’s true nature. He emphasises the importance of self-inquiry, pointing people toward a deeper awareness of the Self beyond thoughts, emotions, and identifications.
Now based in Portugal, Mooji’s teachings have touched countless people around the world through retreats, satsangs, and online resources, helping them to experience peace, clarity, and liberation. Mooji lives with a deep sense of humility and love, always encouraging seekers to realise their own inherent divinity and freedom.

Favourite Mooji Teachings
Mooji’s teachings focus on helping people recognise their true nature (their soul) and find lasting peace. Here are five key points of his teachings:
1. We Are the Awareness, Not the Mind or Body
Mooji teaches that the true self is the pure, unchanging awareness behind all our thoughts and experiences. We are not our body, emotions, or thoughts – we are the awareness that witnesses them.
2. Self-Inquiry: “Who Am I?”
A powerful practice Mooji offers is asking, “Who am I?” This question helps us look beyond the thoughts and stories we identify with and discover the truth of who we are – the awareness that is always present.
3. The Ego Is an Illusion
The ego, or the sense of “I” that is attached to personal stories, is an illusion that causes suffering. By seeing through the ego and not identifying with it, we can experience true freedom and peace.
4. Stay Present and Observe Without Attachment
Instead of getting caught up in thoughts, emotions, or desires, Mooji encourages us to stay present and simply observe them without attachment. This helps us reconnect with our true self and experience peace.
5. Surrender and Trust Life
Mooji teaches the power of surrender – letting go of control and trusting the flow of life. When we stop resisting and let go of the need to control, we can experience the peace that is always found in the present moment.
These simple teachings aim to help people realise their true, unchanging nature and experience the freedom and peace that come from that realisation.

Key Mooji Takeaways
One of our favourite takeaways from years of studying Mooji is the simple fact that our minds can’t find the truth. The human mind, with all its thoughts and concepts, can never grasp the ultimate truth of who we are (souls). This truth is not something to be thought about or figured out intellectually. It is something that can only be realised/ felt / experienced in the silence and stillness beyond thought.
Mooji encourages us to let go of the personal stories we identify with – the roles, labels, and experiences that shape our sense of “self.” Holding onto these stories keeps us trapped in the past and prevents us from experiencing the present moment in its fullness.
Mooji often says that life, as it is right now, is perfect. Even the challenges and difficult moments are part of the larger unfolding. When we stop resisting what is, we begin to see the perfection and grace in everything, even in what seems unpleasant or uncomfortable.
Mooji teaches that we are not the doers of our actions, but rather the silent witnesses of them. When we let go of the sense of “I” as the one who controls or causes things, we come to see that life is unfolding naturally, and we are simply witnessing it.
True freedom, according to Mooji, lies beyond the desires and attachments that the mind creates. Freedom is not about fulfilling desires, but about transcending the pull of the mind and experiencing a state of peace and contentment that comes from within, regardless of external conditions.
Mooji often reminds us that we don’t need to search for truth or enlightenment because it is already here, in the present moment. The realisation of our true self is not something to be attained, but something to be recognised. Everything we seek is already within us.
Mooji teaches that the mind’s constant need for understanding and explanation can be a barrier to spiritual awakening. Instead of trying to figure everything out, he encourages simply resting in the present moment, letting go of the need for intellectual answers, and allowing life to reveal its truth through direct experience.
